You’re only as good as your tools.
I could go on for days about all the fun accessories you can buy for your griddle. DAYS. But when you get down to it, a good griddler only needs a few things to be successful. By no means am I telling you to stop with the basics – if your bank account allows, go wild! But let’s talk about a decent foundation of accessories you can build from.
Spatula
There is no item more important to griddling than the spatula. Don’t @ me – it’s the truth. Now, whichever version of a spatula you choose is up to you, but I would suggest buying two. A lighter more flexible one, and a heavier one. Here’s a great example of a lighter set.
Tongs
When you can’t flip it with a spatula, you gotta grab the tongs. My favorite are the Blackstone Scraper tongs. They grip well, the scrape the griddle surface, and they have a serrated edge to cut open food. What the heck, buy two!
Squeeze Bottles
Yes, I said bottles. Get two. You’ll need one for oil and one for water. Oil is your lifeline on the griddle so make sure you’ve got a good quality bottle to store your oil in. You’ll be using a lot. A LOT. The other bottle is for water which is helpful with cleaning and steaming.
Chef’s Knife
I’m sure you have some beautiful knives already that you love. Awesome. But if you don’t, start your soon to be LARGE collection of knives off with a high quality chef’s knife. It’s very versatile and can handle most jobs. I’ve tried quite a few, but absolutely love Shun Cutlery. It’s pricey, but absolutely phenomenal.
Cutting Board
Now that you’ve got a bad ass knife, you’re gonna need a bad ass cutting board. Or two. Or three. Get yourself a quality board that will double for serving, because you’re definitely going to want to show off your delicious dishes. I’ve got some cheap ones for quick cutting, but my go-to for quality comes from Sonder LA. I love their versatile cutting boards and might have a slight obsession with them. It’s cool, there’s mutual love there.
You’ve got your marching orders. Now get out there and fire up the griddle!
